Introduction

Most everyone is looking for ways to tighten their budgets. Discover ideas to print affordably, plus find tips for saving money by printing useful materials yourself.

Get affordable, cost-effective printing equipment

HP Photosmart printer.
You can own the photo printing expertise of an HP Photosmart printer for under $100.

Due to advances in printing technology, color printers with a host of innovative features are less expensive than ever. Here are some tips to get the most out of the technology:

  • Buy a dependable printer. All HP Deskjet printers and many HP Officejet and Photosmart printers are surprisingly affordable. Between the HP printers available in this price range there is a wide variety of functions to choose from, including wireless, print-shop quality color, photo printing, and All-in-One capabilities.

  • Consider individual inks. Many entry-level HP printers and All-in-Ones, such as the HP Photosmart D5460 printer, use individual inks rather than multicolor cartridges, so you only replace cartridges for the ink you use.

  • Save energy. Explore HP ENERGY STAR® qualified products, all of which meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and US Department of Energy.

Stock up on printing supplies, strategically

    An HP Photo Value Pack.
Save money by getting the ink and paper you need to affordably print lab-quality photos at home.
    Shop for supplies graphic.
Buying larger quantities online saves time, saves money, and saves peace of mind.

Saving money printing doesn’t necessarily mean printing less; it just means printing smarter.

  • Buy Value Packs. Photo Value Packs include sheets of HP Photo Paper plus ink cartridges, packaged together for a lower cost than if you purchase them separately. They are made to work together, which means you get the best-quality photo prints.1

  • Use Original HP inks. HP’s proprietary inks are engineered and tested to ensure delivery of a broad range of vivid, lifelike colors and crisp black text.

Original HP inks are always the best choice for optimum image quality and the overall health of your printer. And they have a much lower fail rate than refilled ink or remanufactured cartridges.

  • Purchase larger quantities online. It’s easy with SureSupply—a free tool found in most HP printers. SureSupply cues you to instantly order the exact print supplies you need as soon as you receive your low-ink or toner alerts. Supplies can be ordered online either through HP or a participating retailer and often include free shipping.

  • Buy high-capacity inks. Look for an “XL” after the cartridge number when purchasing HP ink. These high-capacity ink cartridges offer both a better value than the standard size, and less-frequent ink replacement.

Top techniques for saving money on ink and paper

The HP Officejet 6500 in a home setting by windows.
HP printers, such as the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One, come loaded with features that help you save paper, ink, and money.
  • Manual duplexing. Save paper and money by printing on both sides of the page.

  • Print more than one page to a sheet. Most HP printers, such as the inexpensive HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One, can print more than one page on a single sheet of paper. Look for Layout or Pages Per Sheet in the printer dialog box (sometimes called 2-up, 4-up, or n-up printing). This feature will let you print 2 or 4 pages per sheet.

  • Draft quality. To save on ink for pages that don’t need to be of the highest quality, select Draft when choosing to print a document.
