Introduction

A scanner or All-in-One with a glass flatbed that handles legal-sized documents can help smooth your paper trail. Learn how to print, scan, and copy legal-sized documents and which HP devices can help- make the process fast and simple.

Benefits of legal-sized scanner glass

Man and woman at desk looking at papers.
HP All-in-Ones and scanners with legal-sized or larger scanner glass make it easiest to deal with legal-sized (8.5" x 14") documents. For instance:

  • A flatbed allows you to copy documents in any condition, while an ADF (automatic document feeder) may not accept wrinkled, torn, or fragile documents.
  • Flatbeds are useful for those who work with legal-sized documents such as:
    • Contracts
    • Trusts
    • Real estate documents
    • Government documents
    • Orders/Invoices

Prepare to print with legal paper

Paper tray accessory.
Add convenience with a second paper source such as this 350 sheet paper tray for Officejet Pro K5400 Printer.
Before printing on legal-sized paper, remember to:

Some printers, such as the HP LaserJet M3027 MFP or the HP Officejet 8500 Premier All-in-One, feature a second paper tray for surplus paper storage or an additional type of print media. If your printer or All-in-One does not offer a second tray, check out HP’s selection of paper handling accessories to find attachable paper trays designed for a variety of printer series.

Receive legal-sized faxes on legal paper

HP Officejet L7780 All-in-One, with Setup circled in red.
Access the main Setup menu to turn the Automatic Reduction feature On or Off.
If you want your device to print faxes on legal-sized paper, you must first disable the Automatic Reduction feature* (On is the default setting):

  • Press the Setup button on the printer control panel
  • Select Advanced Fax Setup and press OK
  • Scroll down to the Automatic Reduction option and choose Off

After you’ve turned off the Automatic reduction feature, Set your default paper choice to legal-sized.

* The Automatic Reduction feature reduces the size of an incoming fax so that it fits on the paper that is loaded—allowing you to receive a legal-sized fax even if your device is not currently set to use legal-sized paper.
