What’s the story on solid state storage technology today?
Explore the use of solid state drive (SSD) storage technology in your enterprise environment—and gain an understanding on where your business can benefit from different solid state storage solutions.

Not your parents’ solid state

With all the buzz about solid state, you’d think it was a brand new technology. In fact, solid state storage technology has been changing the way consumers communicate, create and share information for more than a quarter of a century. What’s new now is the way business and technology trends are influencing the adoption of new solid state storage technology designs in the enterprise computing environment.

Weigh the benefits

Total cost of ownership—that’s the real value proposition for solid state storage. Although still in the development stage, solid state storage solutions can offer:

  • Lower power consumption compared to hard drives
  • Improved performance
  • Improved environmental balance

But also know that solid state storage technology can present its own set of challenges:

  • Higher acquisition cost
  • Lower life expectancy
  • Lower capacities

Not all solid state storage is created equal

We at HP categorizes solid state technology into four connection models:

  • Memory modules via the processor or memory bus
  • Mezzanine or PCIe PCA’s for I/O acceleration
  • Solid state technology as a drop in replacement for traditional hard drives
  • Appliance-like self-contained solutions for external attachment

While every spinning disk in a server, storage device, workstation, desktop or notebook is a candidate for solid state storage, not every application is suited for it. What’s more, the solid state storage solution needed in each of these areas is not the same. Whether your application or server environment requires larger memory capability, I/O acceleration, high performance storage in existing infrastructure or an externally attached specialized device, rest assured that HP is investigating an appropriate solution.

Much more to come from HP

We are working closely with our partners to deliver storage and server solutions that help you accelerate business growth while minimizing the costs and risks of adopting new solid state solutions.
