The Globus Toolkit 3.2 All Services package has been built and tested on Alpha systems running Tru64 UNIX (V5.1A and V5.1B), HP 9000 (PA-RISC) 2.0 systems running HP-UX (11.11) and Itanium®-based systems running both HP-UX (11.23) and Linux (RH7.2). While the Globus Toolkit installation instructions apply to all HP platforms, there are several additional issues which must be addressed; these are documented below:

                    hp-ux: make -f unix/Makefile hpux
                    tru64: make -f unix/Makefile osf1

  • Download the appropriate HP Java 1.4 SDK and follow the installation instructions. In general:

                    hp-ux: swinstall
                    tru64: setld -l tmpdir

  • On HP-UX 11.11 and Tru64 5.1A (and all previous revisions), the container will fail to start, ultimately reporting these errors:

                    Failed to initialize container handler:
                    java.lang.Exception: grim setuid program failed.
                    globus-grim:1083184912: globus ::
                    ERROR: Couldn't create proxy certificate

The actual problem is the lack of a /dev/urandom random number device on these older systems. The easy fix (using the RANDFILE environment variable) does not work for GT3. While the correct solution is to run the Entropy Gathering Demon, a quick (and insecure) work-around is to create a /dev/urandom file containing at least 256KB of data. Such a file can be created on another system with a real /dev/urandom device using this command:

             % dd if=/dev/urandom of=/tmp/urandom bs=256k count=1

The Pre-WS bundles provide support for GT2 services. If building the Pre-WS (pre-web services) packages, all GT2 prerequesites must be satisfied. The GT2 prerequesites for HP platforms can be found here:

These bundles have been tested across all HP platforms with varying results. Specifically, GT2 compatibility is not, by default, functional on HP-UX / PA-RISC due to the way the PA-RISC linker saves absolute path names in shared libraries. This issue can be resolved by creating symbolic links from the directory where the GT2 libraries were built to where they are ultimately installed. The Tru64 / Alpha GridFTP server is also not working at this time. The Pre-WS bundles on IA-64 platforms (both HP-UX and Linux) are fully functional.

GT3.2 is not supported on Alpha/Linux for two reasons. First, the latest Java SDK available for Alpha/Linux is version 1.3; however using this to build GT3.2 results in the build failure:

                    [javac] The system is out of resources.
                    [javac] Consult the following stack trace for details.
                    [javac] java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

Our test system is configured with 256MB memory and 1.2GB swap, so we suspect the problem may lie with the Java compiler itself. In addition, GT3.2 requires Java 1.4 (as explained here) so without a Java 1.4 port for Alpha/Linux, GT3.2 can not be built on this platform.
